The king of the enka singers Kitajima Saburo (66) is being investigated on failure to disclose some ¥400 million to the tax authorities over the course of seven years up to 2002. The money includes fes for private party appearances and hundreds of suits and other stage costumes received. The amount of money involved and “Sabu-chan’s” God-like status in showbiz ensured lots of media coverage of the story. But the former is a mere drop in his huge fortune and the latter makes it unlikely that his career will be too seriously affected.
